Paper Abstract:      This study aims to explore the effect of digital books on 4th graders’ learning of Chinese character recognition. The research purpose of this study is to understand how digital books impact learning outcomes, including learners’ recalling and applying performance of Chinese characters. In addition, students’ perception of learning difficulty and motivation were collected. We had eleven 4th graders as participants, and they were randomly assigned into 2 groups with different textbook formats; one was a traditional paper-based book group and the other was a digital book group. Participants were asked to do a pre-test first, and then they read their assigned books for 15-20 minutes. After they finished reading, they were gave a post-test. The results show that there was no significant difference in the improvement of character recall between groups. However, in the character applying level, learner improvement in the digital book group was significantly better than that of the traditional book group. Students’ learning motivation in the digital book group was also significantly higher. The study showed that digital books increased learners’ character applying performance and motivation.
